Tips for Driving in Snowy and Icy Weather

This time of year the weather can be unpredictable, especially when it comes to snow and ice. It’s important to be cautious when driving during winter weather, because annually 24% of weather-related vehicle crashes happen on snowy, slushy and icy roads.

Here are several tips on how to stay safe this winter:

  • Winterize your car and keep an emergency kit with items like gloves, a window scraper for ice, first aid necessities, a small shovel and jumper cables. Kits like this one can be found in most home improvement stores, some grocery stores and online and are a great start.
  • Remember to remove ALL snow and ice from your car and windshield before driving.
  • Keep a safe following distance on the road. It takes up to 10 times longer to stop on snow and ice than it does on dry pavement.
  • Don’t use cruise control on slippery roads.
  • Remember, bridges ice before roads, so drive slow!
  • Always keep your gas tank at least halfway full to avoid freezing.
  • Accelerate, decelerate and drive slowly.
  • Most importantly, if you find yourself in trouble after driving on icy or snowy roads, call 911 to get help.
